Tips to help avoid traps that can drop your credit risk rating

Manage the credit you don’t use.

WiredPRNews.com - It is easy to apply for a store credit card today and then forget all about it in three years. However, that account will remain on your credit report and affect your credit score as long as it is open. Having credit lines and credit cards you don’t need makes companies view you as a bigger credit risk because you run the risk of “overextending” your credit.

Having lots of accounts you don’t use also increases the odds that you will forget about an old account and stop making payments on it, resulting in a lowered credit score. Only keep open accounts that you currently use and make sure that all other accounts are closed. Having fewer accounts will make it easier for you to keep track of your debts and will increase the chances of you making all payments on time while maintaining a good credit score. However, you must realize that when you close an account, the record of the closed account remains on your credit report and that can also affect your credit score for a while. In fact, closing unused credit accounts may actually cause your credit score to drop in the short term, as you will have higher credit balances spread out over a smaller overall credit account base.

For example, if your unused accounts amounted to $2,000 and you owe $1,000 on accounts that you have now (let’s say on two credit cards that total $2,000), you have gone from using one fourth of your available credit ($1,000 owed on a possible $4,000 you could have borrowed) to using one half of your credit (you owe $1,000 from a possible $2,000). This will actually cause your credit risk rating to drop. In the long term, not having the extra temptation to charge and resisting credit that you don’t need can work for you.

Limit inquiries on your credit report.

Every time someone looks at your credit report, an inquiry is noted. If you have many inquiries on your report, it may appear that you are shopping for several loans at once or that you have been rejected by lenders. Both can make you appear to be a poor credit risk and may affect your credit score. This means that you should be careful about who you allow to access your credit report and when. If you are shopping for a loan, do so within a short period of time because inquiries made within a few days of each other will generally be lumped together and counted as one inquiry. You can also cut down on the number of inquiries on your account by approaching lenders you have already researched and may be interested in doing business with. By researching first and approaching second you will likely have only a few lenders accessing your credit report at the same time, which can help save your credit score.

Martha Lane Fox’s ‘Network Nation’ will help the jobless in UK

WiredPRNews.com - Internet millionaire Fil Adams Mercer put his support squarely behind the Coalition Government’s plans to get 10 million more Britons to use the internet.

“There were seven million jobs advertised online last year. 900,000 unemployed people do not currently use the internet. It’s a no brainer,” said Mr Adams Mercer, whose online parcel company Parcel2Go has grown to a £16 million business.

Martha Lane Fox, the Government’s ‘digital champion’ and founder of Lastminute.com, intends to have 100% of the British public online by the Olympic year 2012 with her ‘Network Nation’.

The potential savings for Government are obvious if a higher percentage of administrative functions can be performed online.

“We’re not advocating that everyone has a computer at home. There has been so much ICT (information and communication technologies) investment into communities – into schools, into GP surgeries, into libraries. For example, there are 500,000 computers locked up in schools every night. That’s just dumb, especially now, when we need to be sweating our assets as much as we can,” she said.

The Prime Minister said: “We need to ensure that people aren’t being left behind as more and more services and business move online. Promoting digital inclusion is essential for a dynamic modern economy and can help to make government more efficient and effective.”

Mr Adams Mercer also said that there was huge wastage of IT equipment in the UK.

“Some companies and individuals are upgrading and discarding computers every year. The Government should introduce a financial incentive to recycle as much of that kit as possible within the community,” he said.

Delta to allow booking on Facebook

Atlanta – Delta Air Lines Inc. is set to begin allowing passengers to book flights on Facebook. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the airline announced on Thursday that it has launched a Facebook “Ticket Window,” making it the first to provide customers with reservation access on the social networking site. Delta, which has also recently redesigned its website, has purportedly stated the change will aid them in facilitating more direct customer interaction online.

As noted in the report, the Atlanta based airline also plans to make changes to its website and airport kiosks as well as launch an application for the iPhone for customers in the coming weeks, which will enhance their experience with tasks such as flight check in.

More minority teachers needed in Texas

Study shows businesses missing social networking opportunities

U.S. 2010-07-23 04:12:07 (GMT) WiredPRNews.com – A recent study suggests many businesses are not effectively utilizing social media for engaging customers and others. As reported by PC World, the study by research firm Yankee Group, commissioned by Siemens Enterprise Communications, found that although seventy percent of consumers seek interaction with businesses through online social means, only thirty percent of companies can handle engaging them partly due to a lack of policies that facilitate participation.

UANI Applauds the SEC for Acknowledging Need for Companies to Disclose Iran Business

New York, NY - United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) applauds the Securities and Exchange Commission for acknowledging the need for companies to disclose their business in Iran. In the whiteboard presentation, Pickens details how switching 8 million 18-wheelers to run on natural gas could cut the United States’ dependence on OPEC oil in half. This plan is included in several pieces of legislation, including The NAT GAS Act (H.R. 1835 and S. 1408), the American Power Act (S. 1733), introduced by Senators John Kerry (D-Mass.) and Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.), and the Next Generation Energy Security Act (S. 3535), introduced by Senators Saxby Chambliss (R-GA) and Richard Burr (R-NC).

“You’ll cut down $100 billion on 8 million vehicles,” Pickens said. “$100 billion creates one heck of a lot of jobs in the United States. We’re going to fix the security issue right here with the 5 million OPEC barrels and in eight years, the problem will be solved. Every president since Richard Nixon has said ‘elect me and we’ll be energy independent.’ Not one of them delivered on it. This president is going to focus on it, and together, all Americans will solve the problem for the country.”

Halfway through the year, the United States has not made any significant changes to the amount of foreign oil imports. The latest figures from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Information Administration (EIA) show that the U.S. imported 62 percent of its oil, or 362 million barrels in June 2010, sending approximately $27.3 billion, or $631,255 per minute, to foreign countries, Pickens said in his latest monthly update on foreign oil imports.

“America is as close to an energy plan as it’s been in 40 years,” Pickens said. “We can’t let any more time go by as we continue to spend $27.3 billion per month on foreign oil. We have to act now or risk watching oil rise to $300-$400 a barrel in the next ten years, with import numbers jumping to 75 percent. So instead of spending $365 billion a year on foreign oil, we would be wasting $1 trillion a year. That just won’t work. Congress needs to move fast to enact legislation promoting the greater use of natural gas as a transportation fuel. The future of our economy and national security depend on it.”

Sam’s Club to offer small business loans

BlueChip Energy Starts Development of 10 MW Solar Farm in Florida

Expected To Be One of the Largest Private Solar Plants in the State

LAKE MARY, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--BlueChip Energy™, a provider of complete solar energy solutions for residential, commercial, government and utility applications, today announced it has started stage one of the Rinehart Solar Farm, a 10 MW utility-scale solar PV facility in Central Florida.

The Rinehart Solar Farm project, located in Lake Mary, Fla., will have a total capacity of 10 megawatts (MW) and an annual generation of approximately 15,000,000 kilowatt-hours. It will cover a portion of the 380,000 square foot rooftop space and surrounding acreage of BlueChip Energy’s Lake Mary facility.

It will feature 520 monocrystalline 230 Watt panels and two state-of-the-art 60 kW Fronius inverters. The first stage is expected to be completed by July, 2010. Stage two is a roof top plant consisting of 500 kW. Subsequent stages will consist of a third, 1.4 MW rooftop system and 8 MW of ground-based systems.

The company has a power purchase agreement (PPA) to supply Progress Energy Florida with renewable solar power from the Rinehart Solar Farm.
