CBP Intercepts Go-Fast Boat, Seizes 750 Pounds of Cocaine
Corpus Christi, Texas — Friday, April 10, 2009 - Customs and Border Protections’ Air and Marine agents and detection enforcement officers Monday intercepted a boat carrying more than 750 pounds of cocaine in the waters of the western Caribbean Ocean. A CBP surveillance aircraft was conducting flight operations in the region when the crew detected a boat with a small radar signature traveling at a high rate of speed in open waters. The crew vectored a Dutch naval vessel in to inspect the boat. The Dutch naval vessel dispatched a helicopter and sent a crew aboard. The crew discovered the illegal narcotics. After spending more than six hours monitoring the situation, the P-3 crew was relieved by another Air and Marine aircraft from Puerto Rico. “Our Air and Marine agents actively patrol the waters and skies as we conduct our mission to protect our nation’s borders. When we encounter suspicious activity, we investigate it,” said Lothar Eckardt, CBP’s air operations director in Corpus Christi, Texas. “This year, P-3 operations aircraft in Corpus Christi and Jacksonville, Fla. assisted in the seizure of more than 84,000 pounds of cocaine and disrupted the shipment of more than 48,000 pounds of contraband.” |
