Assault on Federal Officer Investigated At approximately 6:30 p.m. on Monday, June 7, 2010, Customs and Border Protection Border Patrol agents responded to a group of suspected illegal aliens being smuggled into the U.S. from Mexico near the Paso del Norte Port of Entry. One subject, Oscar Ivan Pineda Ayala, was initially detained on the levy. Another agent arrived on his bicycle along the cement apron that forms the river bank on the U.S. side. That agent detained a second subject, Augustin Alcaraz Reyes, but other subjects ran into Mexico and began to throw rocks at the agent. This agent, who had the second subject detained on the ground, gave verbal commands to the remaining subjects to stop and retreat. However, the subjects surrounded the agent and continued to throw rocks at him. The agent then fired his service weapon several times, striking one subject who later died. The Federal Bureau of Investigation has jurisdiction for any assault on federal officers and is the lead agency. The investigation continues and is being worked with El Paso Police Department, Customs and Border Protection Internal Affairs, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and Department of Homeland Security Office of the Inspector General. The area where this incident occurred is a known high-risk crime area where rocks are regularly thrown at Border Patrol agents and where other assaults have been reported. Ollie Snyder is quoted in the report as stating of she and her sister’s plight to remain in the country, “We still have hope… We still have a chance that the Board of Immigration Appeals in Virginia could approve it.” The sisters have reportedly been trying to obtain green cards since 1985. Snyder is further quoted as stating, “We’re not trying to go under the system or around the system… We’re wanting to do everything right. We’re wanting to comply.” Dallas immigration lawyer Nicolas Chavez is quoted as stating of assistance received from politicians such as Rep. Michael Burgess, “They could have some influence with the Department of Homeland Security… That’s the department that’s in charge of executing any orders for deportation.” Man Sentenced to Federal Prison for Assaulting a Border Patrol Agent with His Vehicle LAREDO, TX—Rigoberto Torres-Gomez, a citizen of El Salvador who was illegally residing in Houston, has been sentenced to 55 months in the Bureau of Prisons for assault on a federal officer while in the performance of his official duties by means and use of a dangerous weapon, United States Attorney José Angel Moreno announced today. Torres, 30, was arrested after he assaulted a Border Patrol agent with his vehicle on IH-35 near Laredo, Texas, during an attempt to transport 10 illegal aliens. On Feb. 15, 2009, at approximately 10 p.m., Border Patrol (BP) agents observed 10 suspected undocumented aliens running out of the brush and into Torres’ Isuzu Rodeo parked along the access road to the highway. A BP agent, who was tracking the group through the brush, approached the vehicle, attempted to apprehend the subjects and began struggling with one of the undocumented aliens which left the agent in front of the vehicle. The agent drew his service weapon and ordered Torres to turn off the vehicle and for the occupants to exit. that point, Torres accelerated and struck the agent with the vehicle. As the vehicle approached him, the agent tried to move in order to avoid being hit and fired his service weapon, wounding Torres. The vehicle came to a stop alongside the access road and Torres was treated by BP agents for his injuries at the scene and was later taken to a local hospital. The agent was also taken to the hospital where he was treated for his injuries. The two-count superseding indictment charging Torres with transportation of an illegal alien for financial gain and assault on a federal officer was returned Sept. 1, 2009. On Feb. 4, 2010, Torres pleaded guilty to count two of the indictment. The investigation was conducted by the FBI and was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Sam Sheldon and Michael C. Elliott. President Obama’s Meeting with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus
President Obama met with members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus about the need to fix our nation’s broken immigration system. The President discussed his upcoming speech on comprehensive immigration reform with the members, and his desire to see a bipartisan process based on the proposal presented in the Senate and building on the Schumer-Graham framework. The President noted that the bipartisan approach in that proposal thoughtfully addresses the need to further secure our borders and demands accountability from both workers who are here illegally and unscrupulous employers who game the system. During the meeting the President also reiterated the unprecedented efforts his Administration has taken to secure our borders, including his request to Congress for $600 million in supplemental appropriations and the deployment of up-to an additional 1,200 National Guard forces to complement those efforts. The President pointed out that truly securing our border requires comprehensive immigration reform, and said that he wants to continue to work with the CHC and the Congress to act at the earliest possible opportunity. The President thanked the CHC members for their strong support over the past year and half, having helped pass a historic economic recovery bill, health care reform, education reform, and being on the cusp of passing Wall Street reform that ensures the irresponsibility of the past doesn’t lead us to another crisis. In addition, the President once again made clear his views on the recent law passed in Arizona and noted that the Department of Justice was reviewing it. President's Meeting with Grassroots Leaders to Discuss Comprehensive Immigration Reform The President met with representatives from a broad range of community groups to discuss the ways in which his Administration is working with stakeholders around the country as well as members of Congress to craft a comprehensive approach that will finally fix our broken immigration system. The President reiterated that he wants to see a bipartisan process based on the proposal presented in the Senate and building on the Schumer-Graham framework, which thoughtfully addresses the need to further secure our borders and demands accountability from both workers who are here illegally and unscrupulous employers who game the system. During the meeting the President also reiterated that truly securing our border requires comprehensive immigration reform, said that his Administration will continue to work with Congress to act at the earliest possible opportunity and he announced that he would be delivering a speech soon on the importance of passing comprehensive immigration reform. He also thanked the community groups for their support and hard work on this issue as this important process moves forward. In addition, the President once again made clear his views on the recent law passed in Arizona and noted that the Department of Justice was reviewing it. Colbert, immigrant farm workers issue job challenge
San Francisco 2010-06-26 20:07:41 (GMT) WiredPRNews.com –Immigrant farm workers are issuing a challenge for Americans to take their jobs. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the United Farm Workers of America has begun a “Take Our Jobs” campaign to give unemployed workers the opportunity to experience the work of farmers, in response to purported assertions made by politicians and activists that work has been taken from Americans and hurt the economy, as well as the call for immigration reform. Comedian Stephen Colbert is set to feature the campaign on his Comedy Central show, the “Colbert Report” on July 8. Arturo Rodriguez, president of the United Farm Workers of America, is quoted by the AP as stating of the matter, “The reality is farmworkers who are here today aren’t taking any American jobs away. They work in often unbearable situations… I don’t think there will be many takers, but the offer is being made. Let’s see what happens.” Those who wish to participate, and apply for available agricultural jobs may visit from webmaster B. javamanmonk: I swore an oath to defend the laws of this country. More than once actually. The first time for the military, and later on for my job with the federal government. I hold the laws of God and country as sacred. I believe the best way for society to prosper, is to abide by the agreed-upon laws and ordinances. Illegal immigrants, are not only from Mexico, but further south, and even across the oceans. Many of these people came from conditions, totally alien to our lifestyle here in America. I have witnessed migrants that unloaded from a bus, and entered a 711 store. This Convenience store, had much glass on the front of the building. As Americans, we are used to such buildings. Sometimes I will push on the wrong side of the door, to enter or exit. I'm sure you have done the same, but I am always pushing on the door. One of the previously mentioned immigrants, when trying to exit the store, had no idea where the door was, and had to be helped to the portal. I think that a person not able to find a door in a glass building, would also be ignorant of U.S. immigration laws. My question is, how could these people find the state of Florida, from thousands of miles away, but not be able to find the door? I believe that they had help, from people, who are not quite so ignorant, of law. Now, I'm sure, that people can get, documentation to be legal farmworkers. So who would you blame, if they did not have legal documentation? We have a problem, in the state of Florida and elsewhere, with workers being undocumented. It is my contention, that their employers should take a more active role, in making sure that these migrants have proper documentation. As long as we all continue to ignore this fact, we will have a problem with undocumented migrants. The burden of illegal immigration, will continue to fall on our already overstretched law-enforcement, military, and court systems, at taxpayer expense. It is time to do our duty as Americans. Pres. John F. Kennedy said, "Ask not what your country can do for you, but ask what you can do for your country." It doesn't cost that much money to go down to the courthouse, and get your paperwork in order. If as employers, we can undertake this small duty as patriotic Americans, we can release our nations defenders, from this babysitting duty of illegal immigratition, so that they may take on the more important job, of combating the illegal drug trade along our Southwest border. The leaders of the drug cartels, just sit and laugh at us, while they continue to sell their poison to our children, and our fellow citizens. The war against drugs should be our main focus. If we don't recognize the true enemy, we will continue to lose on the real battlefront. I have heard it said that the American system is broken, but I say, the system is not broken, but we have failed to keep the law, that we hold sacred. When we point the finger of blame, there are three more fingers pointed back at us. Let's put the shoe on right foot. Let's all do what Americans have always done, when faced with hard times. We must act with righteousness, that will be recognized by the whole world. In closing let me say, if you need a job as a farm worker, follow that link I have provided above, and get your-self a job. I think that Arturo Rodriguez, president of the United Farm Workers of America, is wrong and will be quite surprised how hard Americans will work. There'll be plenty of college and high school people, needing summertime jobs. Americans have been doing this type of hard labor for years. Let us once again, prove what it is to be an American!
