A Competition Powered by the Sun
Secretary Steven Chu just helped kick-off the Department of Energy's 2009 Solar Decathlon. This is a unique student competition on the National Mall that showcases the latest energy efficiency and solar power technologies. It is a great chance to see students pushing the boundaries of what's possible today, and I hope you'll come see the competition in person or follow it online.

work on the roof of their houses.)
Nearly 1,000 students from 20 universities around the world have spent the last two years planning, designing, and building high-efficiency, solar-powered homes. I've already met several of them, and they are an incredible group. Over the next ten days, they'll test the efficiency and performance of their homes in ten contests (hence, the "Decathlon") that simulate real world use. They'll do laundry, cook, and watch TV, just like in any other family home – but all of the electricity and hot water will be generated using the sun.
The homes are open to the public from the 9th through the 18th on the National Mall You can follow the entire competition at www.solardecathlon.gov, and you can get updates direct from the teams through Twitter, Facebook, Flickr and YouTube. I've also posted some photos of the houses on my Facebook page, which can be found at http://facebook.com/stevenchu.
Let the games begin!

Atlantis on Track for November Launch - Atlantis Lifting Resumes
Shuttle Atlantis once again is being lifted into position to be attached to its external fuel tank and solid rocket boosters in NASA Kennedy Space Center's Vehicle Assembly Building.
About 9:45 p.m. EDT Tuesday, a problem with the overhead crane forced technicians to stop the lifting operation. The issue wouldn't allow a "fine" adjustment of the 325-ton crane in the north direction. That left Atlantis suspended on its sling over the VAB transfer aisle overnight and this morning. Engineers discovered a wiring problem and fixed it late this morning. Lifting operations resumed about 12:15 p.m.
During the rest of the day and evening, Atlantis will be moved into the VAB's High Bay 1 and attached to its external tank and SRBs.
Shuttle managers will assess schedules and workflow as operations continue, but they're still looking to support Atlantis' rollout to Launch Pad 39A on Oct. 13 for its STS-129 mission to the International Space Station.
Mariner 10

On Nov. 3, 1973, the Mariner Venus/Mercury 1973 spacecraft, also known as Mariner 10, was launched from NASA's Kennedy Space Center, becoming the first spacecraft designed to use gravity assist. Three months after launch it flew by Venus, changed speed and trajectory, then crossed Mercury's orbit in March 1974.
This photo identifies the spacecraft's science instruments, which were used to study the atmospheric, surface and physical characteristics of Venus and Mercury. This was the sixth in the series of Mariner spacecraft that explored the inner planets beginning in 1962.
