Tulsa, Oklahoma (WiredPRNews.com) – Pioneering TV evangelist Oral Roberts has died. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Roberts passed away Tuesday in California after being hospitalized on Saturday. He reportedly died of pneumonia related complications. Duke University divinity school professor Grant Wacker is quoted by the AP as stating of Robert’s impact on mainstream religious television, “In conservative Protestant culture, he’s second only to Billy Graham… Jerry Falwell is important, too, but I think in the long run we’ll see that Oral Roberts had more impact.” Biographer David Edwin Harrell is further quoted in the report as stating of Roberts, “Oral was a pioneer in opening this whole message up to the mainstream churches and leading a generation of Pentecostals into easier connection with the evangelical world… They had been completely estranged prior to that.” Roberts, who founded Oral Roberts University in 1963, was 91 at the time of his death. Dear Friends, This Good Friday and Easter Sunday, I join Christians throughout Florida and around the world in celebration of faith and the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Each year at this time, we are reminded of both sacrifice and rebirth. The miracle that took place centuries ago continues to impact our daily lives. The God-given gifts of freedom and forgiveness are among the countless blessings we enjoy as Floridians. As we rejoice in God’s unconditional love, I encourage families and friends to remember their neighbors and those in need. Please also join me in praying for the safety and speedy return of our Armed Forces and Florida National Guardsmen and women as they defend our freedoms. As Jewish families in Florida and around the world gather to observe Passover and celebrate freedom, liberty and hope, it is a time to reflect on God's gifts to every man and woman.
