Salt Lake City (WiredPRNews.com) – Snowboarder and Olympic hopeful Danny Davis has reportedly been hospitalized after being involved a non-snowboarding related accident. Further details about the injury were purportedly not yet available at the time of the report. As noted by the AP, Davis and fellow snowboarder Kevin Pearce, who was also injured in an accident during practice in December, were friends. Study suggests health risks for college linemen
U.S. (WiredPRNews.com) – A new study proposes that college linemen may have an increased risk of developing certain health conditions later in life. As reported by LiveScience.com, researchers found that football linemen may be at risk for becoming obese, or developing diabetes, heart disease, and other health issues. Ohio State University football team physician James Borchers is quoted in the report as stating of the implications for the study findings, “A risk associated with the emphasis on needing to be bigger is that some can’t obtain that size with just lifting, so they’re getting some of that body mass in an unhealthy fashion… Clinicians also really need to be paying attention when these guys are done playing. Many players will be done after college. What happens to their body weight then? Can we help decrease their risk for metabolic syndrome or insulin resistance, or even potential cardiovascular problems, with intervention by keeping an eye on their natural progression once they’re done playing? I think that’s where we can make an impact.” More information about the study may be found in the December publication of the Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise journal. Baseball superstar Mark McGwire admits to doping for nearly a decade
Dallas, Texas (CaymanMama.com) — Even stars fall hard every now and then. For former Major League Baseball player, Mark McGwire, the fall is as loud as the rise, having finally admitted to steroid use when he broke Roger Maris’ single season home run record in 1998. In a statement McGwire issued to major news agencies on Monday, he came clean about his steroid use that carried on for almost a decade. Speaking during a phone interview after his statement was released, he clearly regretted his decisions. “It’s very emotional, it’s telling family members, friends and coaches, you know, it’s former teammates to try to get ahold of, you know, that I’m coming clean and being honest,” he said. “It’s the first time they’ve ever heard me, you know, talk about this. I hid it from everybody.” McGwire also admitted to using human growth hormone, adding that he was unsure if the use of the hormone was a contributing factor to some of the injuries that ultimately led to his retirement in 2001. “That’s a good question,” he said. Obviously distraught over his choice to deceive his fans, McGwire did say he decided to use this opportunity to overcome his physical injuries, get back to playing the game he loves, and show the league that he is worth this salary. “I’m sure people will wonder if I could have hit all those home runs had I never taken steroids,” McGwire said. “I had good years when I didn’t take any, and I had bad years when I didn’t take any. I had good years when I took steroids, and I had bad years when I took steroids. But no matter what, I shouldn’t have done it and for that I’m truly sorry.” In 1987, McGwire broke the single-season home run record for rookies, with 49. In 1998, McGwire broke Roger Maris’ single season home run record hitting 70 home runs. Barry Bonds now holds the record. Snowboarder severely injured in accidentSalt Lake City (WiredPRNews.com) – Snowboarder Kevin Pearce has reportedly been seriously injured in an accident. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Pearce suffered a traumatic brain injury after a training accident Thursday and was said to be in stable condition on Saturday. Dr. Holly Ledyard is quoted by the AP as stating of Pearce in a statement released by the Americansnowboarder’s publicist, “Kevin sustained a severe, traumatic brain injury … (and) is being kept sedated… The focus over the next week will be watching for any swelling in his brain and keeping his brain pressure normal.” A spokesperson for Pearce, Danielle Burch, is further quoted in the report as stating of the matter, “Family and friends remain positive and are thankful for the outpouring of support.” Haden Declares for NFL Draft Gainesville, Fla. - Sunday January 3, 2010 - Junior cornerback Joe Haden (Ft. Urban Meyer To Take Leave of Absence, Not Step Down; Addazio Named Interim Head Coach Gainesville, Fla. - Sunday December 27, 2009 University of Florida head football coach Urban Meyer informed his team Sunday afternoon that he will take an indefinite leave of absence rather than step down. Meyer addressed the team shortly before the Gators boarded a plane to New Orleans for Friday evening’s Allstate Sugar Bowl. “During the past couple of days I was offered and encouraged to take a leave of absence,” said Meyer. “I’ve accepted this offer to improve on my health.” The news came less than 24 hours after Meyer had announced he was stepping down as head coach. Meyer will still coach the Gators in the Allstate Sugar Bowl Friday evening before beginning his leave of absence. Florida offensive coordinator Steve Addazio will take over as interim head coach during Meyer’s time away from the program. When asked among the biggest reasons for a change of heart, Meyer stated simply, “the players,” referencing the feeling of being back on the practice field Sunday morning. Also on hand for the press conference were athletics director Jeremy Foley, senior quarterback Tim Tebow and senior linebacker Ryan Stamper. “First and foremost we’re concerned about Coach Meyer taking care of, and addressing his health,” said Foley. “For the last five years I’ve seen his relentless approach to everything he does. Now is a time, however, for him to take care of himself.” Umaga Dies Of Heart Failure

Sport fishing for Greater Amberjack set to close in Gulf federal waters October 20, 2009
The recreational harvest and possession of Greater Amberjack in or from federal waters in the Gulf of Mexico will be prohibited from Oct. 24 through Dec. 31. Federal waters extend beyond nine nautical miles from shore in the Gulf off Florida. The National Marine Fisheries Service announced this closure because an established annual recreational harvest quota for greater amberjack in the Gulf has been met. In addition, a person aboard a vessel for which a federal charter vessel/head boat permit for Gulf reef fish has been issued must also abide by this closure provision in Florida state waters. This action is required by regulations implemented under the Fishery Management Plan for Reef Fish Resources of the Gulf of Mexico. However, all other recreational anglers may still harvest 1 greater amberjack of at least 30 inches fork length daily per person in Gulf state waters off Florida (within nine nautical miles from shore) under Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission rules. Biologists ask anglers to report tagged largemouth bass
Biologists with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's (FWC) Fish and Wildlife Research Institute and the University of Florida need assistance with a statewide largemouth bass research study. This year-long project is an interactive way for the public to help biologists obtain critical information necessary to manage the largemouth bass fishery for quality and trophy-sized fish. Governor Markell Promotes Responsible Tailgating at Delaware Race Quota hunters can bring a guestSeptember 18, 2009 If you plan to hunt on a wildlife management area (WMA) this season, you should take note of a change the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission made to its quota permit system. Hunters can now take a friend or family member on their quota hunt. For every general gun, archery, muzzleloading gun, wild hog, mobility-impaired and spring turkey quota permit (excluding Blackwater WMA dog hunts and Holton Creek WMA mobility-impaired hunts), one no-cost, nontransferable guest permit may be obtained until the last day of the hunt at tax collectors' offices and other license agents. To take advantage of this, the guest must have a valid management area permit (unless exempt) as well as all other necessary permits and license required for the specific hunt. 2009-2010 guest permit worksheets are available for download at MyFWC.com/Hunting by clicking under "Limited Entry Hunts." Either the quota permit holder or the guest may fill out the worksheet and present it to any license agent. The Customer ID numbers for both the quota permit holder and guest are needed to fill out the worksheet, as well as the guest's date of birth and four-digit hunt number that identifies the specific hunt. The hunt number is not printed on most quota permits, but it is on the quota permit holder's quota hunt worksheet, which also is at the above Web address. There are some stipulations to the guest permit, however. Both quota permit holder and guest must enter and exit the management area together, share the same vehicle and share a single person's bag limit. Also, the guest may hunt only when the quota permit holder is present on the area. Additionally, on areas that have zone tags, the permit holder and guest must hunt in the same zone. Once issued, a guest permit cannot be changed or given to another person for their use, so it is recommended to wait until just before the hunt before obtaining it. All guests must have picture identification when using their guest permit, and lost permits may be replaced for $2 at any license agent.
