CBP in Florida Intercepts 2 Stolen BackhoesFt. Lauderdale Fla. - On April 16, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers from the cargo enforcement team at Port Everglades intercepted two stolen John Deere backhoes model number 310SG that were inside a container that had been loaded onto a vessel. CBP received a tip from the Broward Sherriff’s office and had the container removed from the Rio Bogota a vessel destined for Costa Rica. The outbound enforcement team conducted an inspection of the container and found the two backhoes. CBP officers then checked the vehicle identification numbers using several law enforcement data and information systems and determined that both of the backhoes were indeed stolen. The backhoes have a domestic value of $320,000 dollars. The backhoes were then turned over to the Broward Sherriff’s office for processing and return to their legitimate owners. “CBP is actively working with our law enforcement partners at our seaports to insure that stolen merchandise is intercepted and returned to its rightful owners. Our commitment to protecting America’s borders is one that encompasses both inbound and outbound inspections,” said Harold Woodward, director of field operations in Miami for U.S. Customs and Border Protection. U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation's borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws. |
